Because on that day the battle of the Boyne was fought between the former British Catholic king James II and the new protestant British king William of Orange. James’ army were named the Jacobites and William’s army were the Williamites. William won the battle so it is seen as a victory for the protestants, and that’s what they still celebrate today.
