Culture

What is culture?

Before you start learning about cultures, we first need to find out what it actually is. What is culture? The Cambridge dictionary describes the word as:

“The way of life, especially the general customs and beliefs, of a particular group of people at a particular time.”

If you look at this definition closely, you might think it is a little vague. What are general customs? And which particular groups? And why do I need to know all this?

Me or we?

To understand how the world works, it is essential to understand its people. In other words: if you want to function in this world, you need to find a way to fit in. That doesn’t mean that you need to behave like everyone else, but it might help you understand your own behaviour. Why do you behave the way you do? Why do you think the way you do? And why do others think differently? Watch the video to understand the difference between ‘WE’-cultures and ‘ME’-cultures.
